Timo Werner’s Return to the Premier League: A Risk for Tottenham?

German striker Timo Werner is back in the Premier League, but his previous stint with Chelsea was far from successful. With just 10 goals in 56 league games, it begs the question – are Spurs taking a risk by signing him on loan from RB Leipzig until the end of the season? Or was his failure at Stamford Bridge simply a case of not being the right fit?

The Disappointing Spell at Chelsea

When Chelsea paid £45m for Werner’s services, it seemed like a logical move. After all, he had an impressive track record at RB Leipzig with 78 goals in 127 appearances. However, things didn’t pan out as expected.

Despite frequently finding himself in good positions and creating numerous scoring opportunities, Werner struggled to convert them into goals. In fact, he was caught offside 38 times during his time at Chelsea and underperformed statistically by scoring eight fewer goals than anticipated.

“Timo struggled as a number nine and his inconsistency in front of goal ultimately led to his departure,” commented Ross Mooring from Chelsea Fancast.

External Factors Contributing to Werner’s Struggles

There were external factors that impacted Werner’s performance during his time in England. Moving to London amidst the Coronavirus pandemic made it challenging for him to settle into a new city. Additionally, he contracted Covid-19 and required time to recover from this illness.

In an attempt to revive his career, Werner returned to RB Leipzig but suffered an ankle injury that ruled him out of contention for the World Cup in Qatar. Although he finished the 2022-23 season with nine goals, his form has been inconsistent this campaign, scoring just two goals in eight league games.

What Can Werner Bring to Tottenham?

Tottenham’s attack has been severely depleted by injuries, making it crucial for them to bolster their squad. While Werner may not have lived up to expectations at Chelsea and RB Leipzig recently, there is potential for him to make an impact at Tottenham.

The German striker’s mobility and goal-scoring ability are still valuable assets that could benefit Ange Postecoglou’s team. Having experienced both success and disappointment in the Premier League before, Werner will be eager to prove himself once again.

It remains uncertain whether Spurs’ decision to sign Timo Werner on loan will pay off or if they are taking a risk. However, providing him with a warm welcome back and creating an environment where he can thrive might just be what he needs to reignite his career in England.
