ITV Criticizes Joey Barton’s Contemptible Remarks Towards Eni Aluko and Lucy Ward
In a recent incident, former footballer Joey Barton has faced criticism from ITV for making “vindictive remarks” towards Eni Aluko and Lucy Ward during his appearance as a pundit on their coverage of the FA Cup third-round tie between Crystal Palace and Everton.
Barton, known for his controversial comments, compared Aluko and Ward to infamous serial killers Fred and Rose West on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter).
ITV expressed their disappointment in Barton’s behavior, labeling his comments as “contemptible and shameful.” In an official statement released on X, the broadcaster stated that targeting two respected pundits based on gender with such malicious remarks is completely unacceptable.
“Football is for everyone,” emphasized ITV in response to Barton’s offensive commentary. The network firmly believes in promoting inclusivity within the sport.
Barton responded defiantly to ITV’s statement by posting an expletive-laden message. He further declared that he will now refer to all of them as serial killers while referring to ITV as being “woke.” His frustration was evident when he added, “I tried to play nice, but you didn’t listen.”
Eni Aluko is a former England international who represented her country over 100 times before retiring in 2020. On the other hand, Lucy Ward enjoyed a successful career playing for Leeds United and Doncaster Belles.
“The Fred and Rose West of football commentary”
– Joey Barton
Barton made his derogatory comments while referring to Aluko and Ward as “the Fred and Rose West of football commentary.” Fred West, along with his wife Rose, were convicted of numerous murders committed at their residence in Gloucester over a span of 20 years.
The football community has rallied against Barton’s remarks. Gary Neville, former Manchester United and England defender turned pundit, expressed his support for ITV’s response on social media platform X.
“Well done ITV. It’s gone too far this… mentioning serial killers is quite simply incredible.”
– Gary Neville
In his post, Neville shared personal anecdotes highlighting the challenges faced by women in sports. He emphasized that such behavior only discourages progress and does not contribute positively towards gender equality within sports and media.
Barton’s recent tirade on social media targeting women working in men’s football has been widely condemned by individuals within the footballing world since the incidents began last month.
