Bethany England: Tottenham Forward Takes a Gamble on World Cup to Impress England Coach

Bethany England’s Sacrifice Pays Off With Lionesses Call-up

In a bold move that could have backfired, Bethany England left title contenders Chelsea to join relegation-threatened Tottenham Hotspur. Her aim was to catch the eye of England manager Sarina Wiegman and earn a call-up to the national team.

The move paid dividends when she received her first Lionesses call up since winning Euro 2022 with the squad. England said it was a risk worth taking.

“I couldn’t control anything except for what I did on the pitch,” she explained. “Thankfully, Spurs came in and gave me game time and confidence which helped me put in great performances week after week.”

England’s signing by Spurs turned out to be an inspired decision with 12 goals in just 12 games for the club. Her form made it difficult for Wiegman to ignore her talent.

“If you’d told me at Christmas that I would make it onto that plane this summer, I would have laughed in your face,” admitted England. “But thankfully my fortunes changed at Spurs.”

New Stars Rise as Retirements & Injuries Hit Team

With key players like Beth Mead, Fran Kirby, captain Leah Williamson missing through injury or retirement of legends such as Ellen White and Jill Scott – there is now an opportunity for new stars shine during this year’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Despite finishing second-highest top scorer during Women’s Super League season, nothing was guaranteed for Bethany England regarding featuring in this major tournament until she got selected recently by Sarina Wiegman herself!

Hoping To Inspire Future Generations Of Players

England is hopeful that her involvement and success with the team can inspire younger generations of players. However, she does admit that competing in a major tournament will bring different pressures such as being far away from home.

“All we can do is our absolute best and hope it’s enough,” commented England.

The world cup brings new challenges for every squad to face. For Bethany England, her bold move has paid off in the ultimate way: a chance to lift the trophy on 20th August with her national team.
