Boxing’s Devin Haney and Vasiliy Lomachenko vie for a crucial match with Shakur Stevenson on the line

The Perplexing Possibilities for Devin Haney and Shakur Stevenson

Devin Haney could be heading towards another super fight against Shakur Stevenson if he retains his undisputed world lightweight titles, but according to Top Rank president Todd DuBoef, it would be a “big mistake” to overlook Vasiliy Lomachenko.

Haney will defend his WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO belts against Lomachenko in Las Vegas on Sunday morning. DuBoef believes that victory over the Ukrainian star would be the finest achievement of Haney’s fast-rising career and could secure a massive clash against former unified super-featherweight king Stevenson.

“Loma says he is 100% and at his finest,” said Duboef. “If Haney can take out Lomachenko when he’s at his best, I think that will mark a very significant accomplishment for Devin.”

DuBoef acknowledges that while Haney has shown great size, speed, footwork and quick hands in previous fights; facing off with someone like Lomachenko requires much more than just these traits.

“This is the matrix,” DuBoef added with emphasis. “You don’t know what you’re up against until you step into that ring with him.”

Lomachenko had previously held reign as a unified champion before unexpectedly losing to Teofimo Lopez in 2020. However, the Ukrainian southpaw has gained momentum in his last three bouts and DuBoef insists Loma will bring his mastery to this weekend’s fight.

“It would be a big mistake to write off Lomachenko,” said Duboef. “He does things in the ring that we have never seen before; footwork, ability to throw punches from all these different angles.”

Devin Haney vs Shakur Stevenson? An Exciting Possibility

Dubofe believes that if Haney retains his title against both Loma and Stevenson he could go on to become one of boxing’s biggest stars.

“With Devin Haney, he’s so talented; it makes sense for him to stay at 135lb. But if he moves up weight class there are opportunities even more exciting than what we’ve seen already.”

DuBoef also mentions how an eventual fight between Stevenson and Haney is a natural fit because they know each other well.

“It would have been like Mayweather and Mosley in their prime – which we didn’t get,” said DuBoef. “It’s that type of fight.”

    The Best Fighting The Best?

A victory over someone as skilled as Lomachenko could prove pivotal in deciding who gets fights with the top boxers next.

“First of all you’re talking about all the hardware,” noted DuBoef. “This is one of those significant moments where somebody is able to unify all titles and hold them.”

He went on: “And then we talk about the best fighting the best… Both Loma and Haney have something to prove.”
