Chris Sutton Demands Klopp’s Touchline Ban
Liverpool’s manager, Jurgen Klopp, ought to face a touchline ban due to his conduct during Sunday’s game against Tottenham, according to Chris Sutton. Klopp received a yellow card as he sprinted toward the fourth official to celebrate Liverpool’s last-minute winning goal in their 4-3 triumph at Anfield.
Sutton expressed his opinion, stating, “Klopp should be banned from the technical area for his actions on the touchline.” He added that a fine would not suffice, especially considering Klopp’s history.
Klopp’s Defense and PGMOL’s Response
Klopp, who injured himself while running to the fourth official John Brooks, later criticized referee Paul Tierney’s manner of addressing him when he got booked, calling it “not OK.” However, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) “strongly refutes” Klopp’s allegations of Tierney’s improper behavior.
During BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, Sutton further commented, “It’s a big deal. Coaches and young players watching might think it’s acceptable to approach and mistreat officials. In my opinion, Klopp deserves a ban. He’s aware his actions were incorrect.”
Backing from Ref Support UK and Call for Harsher Penalties
Ref Support UK’s CEO, Martin Cassidy, supported Sutton’s demand for a touchline ban on Klopp. The charity also urged the Football Association to contemplate stricter penalties to discourage such conduct in the future, including point deductions.
Cassidy informed BBC Sport, “We believe the ban should last a minimum of three games.” He added, “We also think the FA should examine implementing point deductions at all levels for those who consistently mistreat match officials.”
Klopp’s Previous Penalties
Klopp faced a one-match ban in October after being ejected from the Manchester City game for berating the referee’s assistant. The German manager was also fined £30,000 and warned about his future behavior.
