London Irish’s Suspension from Premiership: A Heartbreaking Blow for the Club, Its Fans and Players
The suspension of London Irish from the Premiership is a devastating blow to everyone associated with the club. The news came after they missed a deadline to pay their players and staff or complete a takeover. As a result, they won’t be able to participate in any league next season.
Topsy Ojo, who made more than 300 appearances for London Irish between 2005-2019, described it as “gutting” and “heartbreaking”. In his words, “It is difficult to put into words. I have probably still not processed it, but I am maybe still half in denial.”
This announcement came as a shock to many rugby fans worldwide given that London Irish finished fifth in the Premiership table last season and reached the final of the Premiership Cup. However, it seems that all three clubs (Worcester Warriors Wasps) which faced challenges this season had fragile business models for years.
A Complete Overhaul Required?
It’s time for a complete overhaul of the game and how it’s managed. While London Irish may be the most recent club to face difficulties, there have been many stories regarding rugby this season.
“What is the solution? What does rugby union need to do to ensure this never happens again?” Ojo said.
Rugby needs a clear plan in place so that clubs can operate sustainably. Premiership Rugby, RFU, and RPA must work together to come up with a comprehensive strategy for the future of English rugby. Only then can we prevent such heartbreaking situations from occurring again.
