Former Manchester United Defender Phil Neville Joins Coaching Staff of Canada’s Men’s National Team
The football world was abuzz with the news that former Manchester United defender and England Women’s national team coach, Phil Neville, has agreed to join Canada’s men’s national team coaching staff. This announcement comes just a few weeks after he was sacked from his role as head coach at Inter Miami.
Neville will be joined by ex-Coventry defender Richard Shaw, who is also joining the Canadian coaching team. According to head coach John Herdman, adding both coaches’ winning experiences at the highest levels would greatly benefit their campaign in future matches.
From Player to Coach: A Stellar Career Path for Phil Neville
After ending his playing career with Everton in 2013, Neville didn’t waste any time transitioning into coaching. He had several stints as an assistant with clubs such as Valencia and Manchester United before becoming head coach of England Women’s national team.
“Phil and Richard bring with them winning experiences at the highest levels,” said head coach John Herdman.
During his tenure as England Women’s national team boss, he achieved great success when they won SheBelieves Cup in 2019 and finished fourth at the 2019 World Cup. However, things did not go well during his short stint at Inter Miami where they suffered ten defeats from thirteen games leading up to his sacking earlier this month.
New Opportunities Arise for Former Man Utd Star
Now that he has joined Canada’s men’s national team coaching staff, Neville and Shaw will be part of the team for the upcoming Concacaf Nations League finals in Las Vegas. The Canadian team will face Panama on 15 June at Allegiant Stadium, and a win could see them competing against the winners of USA vs Mexico for their first trophy since 2000.
The Future Looks Brighter with Phil Neville
Neville’s experience as a professional football player combined with his success as head coach for England Women’s national team makes him an excellent addition to Canada’s men’s national team coaching staff. His expertise is expected to boost their performance in future matches.
