Birmingham City Part Ways with Six First-Team Players
Six of Birmingham City’s first-team players, including captain Troy Deeney and former skipper Harlee Dean, have been released by the club at the end of their contracts. The others leaving are Maxime Colin, George Friend, Jordan Graham and Kevin Long.
The Championship club expressed gratitude to all departing players for their contributions across their time with Blues while stating that talks were ongoing with a number of released players. However, Deeney was offered a new deal in March but decided to leave St Andrew’s after two seasons where he scored 11 goals in 56 appearances.
Deeney joined his hometown club on transfer deadline day in 2021 from Watford after spending more than a decade playing for them. In his final season with Blues, Deeney spent more time as a radio and TV pundit making occasional appearances on Match of the Day. When offered a new contract two months ago, Deeney said he was interested in taking up player-coaching role at the club rather than just being motivated by money.

Meanwhile, defender Harlee Dean ended his six-season stay at St Andrew’s having played over two hundred games for Birmingham city only managing sixteen starts this season before being shown the door along with four others who played limited roles during last year’s campaign around relegation zone which they successfully escaped eventually..

The departures also mean opportunities arise to extend contracts or sign new recruits as Birmingham have taken up options to extend the contracts of Oliver Basey, Rico Browne, Tate Campbell, Tommy Fogarty, Nico Gordon, Marcel Oakley and Kieran Wakefield.
However,having been given a suspended two-point deduction by the EFL for rule breaches during an unsuccessful takeover bid earlier this month The penalty is suspended until the end of the 2023-24 season. This has brought more uncertainty about what other changes might still come at St Andrew’s
