Haydock Recap: Silk Secures a Flawless Victory

Sea Silk Road Triumphs at the Sky Bet Lester Piggott Stakes

The Sky Bet Lester Piggott Stakes had a new champion in Sea Silk Road as Tom Marquand delivered a masterful ride to give trainer William Haggas another success. The Group Three contest, formerly known as the Pinnacle Stakes, was renamed in honor of legendary jockey and Haggas’ father-in-law.

    A Small but Select Cast

With John and Thady Gosden’s Mimikyu declared a non-runner prior to the race, there was still an exciting field for racing fans who attended Haydock. German raider Nachtrose led them along early on from Roger Varian’s Modaara as they raced in single file.

Tailored Victory for Sea Silk Road

Jockey Tom Marquand had Sea Silk Road sitting comfortably at the back of the pack throughout most of the race before making her move with about two furlongs remaining. Despite an impressive challenge from Modaara, it was clear that Sea Silk Road would be Nachtrose’s biggest threat down the stretch.

In full flight within striking distance late on, she swooped past Nachtrose to win by three-quarters of a length and claim victory over other favorites such as Time Lock.

Proud Moment for Trainer William Haggas and Family

This marks yet another impressive achievement for trainer William Haggas who won this same contest last year with Sea La Rosa. His wife Maureen is also the daughter of Lester Piggott himself.

“It’s my father’s race and things like this don’t always happen, so it’s nice when it does,” said Maureen Haggas. “He was obviously a massive part of my life and we shared a lot of interests.”

    Looking Forward to Future Races

Although Royal Ascot would be too soon for Sea Silk Road, William Haggas is confident that his team will find something suitable in the future.

“Our horses are a bit in and out,” she added. “We haven’t really hit our stride, which is disappointing seen as we’re well into June. Hopefully things will change.”

    Fond Memories at Haydock

Piggott rode his first and last winners at Haydock Park Racecourse, making the victory even more special for Tracy Piggott who also attended the event.

“Haydock is a very special place for us because of his history here,” she said.”Obviously it’s emotional and brings back lots of memories”
