Sports community mourns the passing of Paul Barber, a prominent figure in the racing industry

The Passing of a Passionate Jumps Racing Supporter

Paul Barber, the landlord of 14-time champion trainer Paul Nicholls, passed away at the age of 80. This news has left the jumps racing community in shock and grief.

Barber was an ardent supporter of jumps racing and had many significant victories under his belt as both a sole owner and in partnerships with others. He owned See More Business, who won Cheltenham Gold Cup glory with jockey Mick Fitzgerald on board. The duo’s win made it one of Fitzgerald’s proudest days in his career.

In recent years, Barber co-owned Clan Des Obeaux, who achieved dual King George VI Chase success.

    A Memorable Day for Fitzgerald

Fitzgerald expressed how lucky he was to ride a Gold Cup winner for Barber. Winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup aboard See More Business is etched into his memory forever. The moment when Barber led him into the winner’s enclosure after their victory remains one of his proudest moments ever.

“I know what it meant to him to have a Gold Cup winner and I think that is how I would like to remember Paul Barber.”

A Gentleman Who Was A Pleasure To Ride For

Another notable horse that brought fame to Barber was Denman – trained by Nicholls- which won the Cheltenham Gold Cup in partnership with Margaret Findley (mother of pro-punter Harry). Sam Thomas rode Denman during this triumph and remembers Mr.Barber as “a gentleman” who was “a pleasure to ride for”.

“My association with Mr.Barber was obviously through Paul (Nicholls) and you couldn’t wish to meet a nicer gentleman, he was a pleasure to ride for and a real honour to ride for him.”

The jump racing world has lost one of its most passionate supporters. Our thoughts are with his wife Marianne, the entire Barber family as well as those who knew him well during this difficult time.
