Allan Border, legendary Australian cricketer, opens up about his battle with Parkinson’s disease

Former Australia captain Allan Border reveals battle with Parkinson’s disease

In a surprising revelation, former Australia cricket captain Allan Border has disclosed that he has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The legendary cricketer, known for leading his country in a record-breaking 93 Test matches, chose to keep his condition private when he was first diagnosed back in 2016.

“I’ve always been quite private and didn’t want people feeling sorry for me,” admitted the 67-year-old Border.

During his illustrious career, Border played an impressive 156 Tests and 273 ODIs. He led Australia to victory in the coveted World Cup of 1987 and secured three Ashes series wins between 1989 and 1993.

After retiring from professional cricket in 1994, Border continued to contribute to the sport as both a commentator and national team selector.

The former skipper remains optimistic despite his health battle: “Compared to others, I reckon I’m doing pretty well,” he shared candidly with The Australian newspaper. “At this point, I’m not scared about what lies ahead… at least not immediately. If I reach the age of eighty, it’ll be nothing short of miraculous.”

Determined as ever yet realistic about his future prospects on or off the field, Border adds humorously: “There’s absolutely no chance of scoring another century – let’s be clear about that one! Instead, I’ll gracefully fade away into oblivion.”

In addition to immediate family members who have supported him throughout this journey so far,Border confided only in one other person regarding his diagnosis -his former Australian teammate Dean Jones who sadly passed away in 2020.
