Bath Rugby secures the return of lock Elliott Stooke from Montpellier

Lock Elliott Stooke Returns to Bath Rugby

In a surprising turn of events, lock Elliott Stooke has made a sensational return to Bath Rugby until the end of the season. The seasoned player rejoins the club after spending time at French Top 14 side Montpellier.

Stooke’s comeback is significant as it marks his second stint with Bath, following an impressive five-year spell with the Premiership club that ended just over two years ago. During his time in France this season, he managed to score one try in seven games for Montpellier before deciding to make this unexpected move.

This is not the first twist in Stooke’s career journey. After leaving Bath back in 2021, he joined Wasps and enjoyed a successful season with them until their unfortunate demise last year due to financial difficulties.

Bath head of rugby Johann van Graan expressed excitement about having Stooke back on board: “Elliott will bring additional strength and versatility to our set-piece game,” said van Graan. “Our line-out, maul and scrum have been areas we consistently focus on improving, so having someone like Elliott with his experience will undoubtedly be beneficial for us.”

A product of Gloucester’s youth system initially, Stooke left a lasting impact during his first tenure at Bath where he played over 120 games for the club. Notably, he has also represented England’s under-20 side and England Saxons.

Returning to The Rec holds special significance for him as well: “It’s an absolute honor to be back at Bath,” Stooke said. “Playing at The Rec has always been a remarkable experience, so being able to don the Blue, Black and White hoops once again is truly humbling.”

Stooke also expressed his excitement about reuniting with familiar faces: “I’m thrilled to work alongside Lee [Blackett] again and have the opportunity to play alongside Alfie [Barbeary]. It’s amazing how things come full circle.” He concluded with gratitude for the chance given to him by Bath Rugby.
