Clark draws inspiration from late mother’s teachings to climb up US Open leaderboard

US Open: Wyndham Clark plays big in honor of late mother

Wyndham Clark’s impressive performance at the US Open is fueled by a two-word rule he carries with him – “Play Big.” This instruction was left to him by his mother, Lise Clark, who passed away from breast cancer while he was studying at Oklahoma State University.

Despite her death leaving a gaping hole in his life and causing him to consider quitting golf altogether, Wyndham persevered and has emerged as one of the top contenders at this year’s tournament.

The Denver-born golfer opened with a six-under-par round on Thursday followed by another solid showing on Friday that put him in second place heading into the final rounds. His success so far marks an improvement from previous years where he failed to make it past the cut.

In addition to playing for himself, Wyndham feels compelled to play for something greater than just personal glory. He wants to be a role model and inspire others through his performances on the course.

“I want to show everyone the person I am and how much joy I have out there playing,” said Clark. “I hope I can inspire people to want to be like me and be better than me.”

    A Bittersweet Moment

Despite his excellent start, there is still an underlying sense of sadness for Wyndham who wishes that his mother could see him play today.

“I wish she could be here,” said Clark. “But I know she’s proud of me, and everything I do out here is a lot for her.”

    A Year of Success

Wyndham’s performance at the US Open follows an already successful year. In May, he won his first PGA Tour title at the Wells Fargo Championship in North Carolina with a four-shot victory over Xander Schauffele.

The win was especially significant for Wyndham because it came after five years and 133 PGA Tour starts without a win. His triumph not only boosted his confidence but also re-established him as a contender among the best players in the world.

    Final Thoughts

Wyndham Clark is playing big this week, honoring his late mother’s memory while inspiring others through his performances on the golf course. He has emerged as one of this year’s top contenders and will look to continue playing with integrity and heart throughout the remainder of the tournament.
