Enhanced Durability of F1’s Wheel Rims to Tackle Tire Looseness Issues

Breaking News: BBS Pushes Boundaries with MK2 Wheel Rim Design!

In a bid to reduce costs and improve safety in Formula 1, the International Automobile Federation (FIA) mandated BBS as the sole supplier of wheel rims since 2022. This decision aimed to standardize equipment across all teams. However, it soon became apparent that the transition from smaller designs to larger 18-inch wheels brought about new challenges.

The extreme forces experienced by these bigger rims during impacts led to frequent damage and even tire detachment. The vulnerability of these rims to side forces has caused several incidents where tires have come loose after crashes. One memorable incident occurred at the Brazilian Grand Prix last year when Alex Albon’s Williams collided with another car, resulting in his tire flying off and striking Daniel Ricciardo’s AlphaTauri.

In response to concerns raised by the FIA regarding rim performance, BBS undertook an extensive development project throughout 2023. Working closely with various undisclosed teams following a summer break, they gradually introduced their improved MK2 design towards the end of last season.

BBS is proud to announce that its upgraded MK2 wheel rims have received positive feedback from teams testing them out. As a result, these tougher wheels will now become standard across the grid for the upcoming 2024 season.

    Strengthened Design Brings Enhanced Resistance

The key focus of BBS’ MK2 development was to address the increased side impacts experienced by the 18-inch wheel rims compared to their smaller predecessors. While maintaining an identical spoke shape to its predecessor, the outer rim design has been significantly reinforced.

According to BBS, fatigue was never a problem with their original design. However, they recognized the need for better resistance against side impacts that cause tire loosening. The MK2 rims boast over twice the side impact resistance without a significant increase in weight.

Beyond enhancing durability, BBS has also made strides in improving the visual appeal of their wheel rims. Thanks to advancements in coating treatment and newly completed manufacturing facilities at BBS MS, paint properties have seen notable enhancements.

A Positive Response from FIA and Teams

The FIA expressed satisfaction with BBS’ response to developing stronger wheel rims following numerous incidents of tire detachment on track. Their collaboration led to improved safety measures without compromising performance or aesthetics.

Speaking about the MK1-MK2 transition process, a representative from BBS stated: “The background of the MK2 development is that compared to the era of 13-inch wheels, 18-inch wheels are subject to greater side impacts from the outer rim of the wheel.”

This collaborative effort highlights how innovation can address critical challenges within Formula 1 while emphasizing driver safety as a top priority.
