McLaren Racing Calls For Changes in Formula 1 Sustainability Rules

In recent years, the world of Formula 1 racing has focused heavily on sustainability. The sport has made a pledge to become net-zero carbon by 2030. Nevertheless, McLaren Racing believes that F1’s budget cap forces teams into pitching sustainability against competitiveness.

Zak Brown, the CEO of McLaren Racing, called for “a clear regulatory framework with financial, technical and sporting regulations that better enable us all to innovate and invest in sustainability.” He suggests creating areas outside the spending cap where teams can work towards making F1 more sustainable without jeopardizing their competitiveness.

“Sustainability has been on the radar for some time,” Brown said. “Now everyone is getting rightfully stuck into it; there are areas we think we can invest in sustainability technologies that may not bring a short-term performance benefit that are not really addressed in the financial regulations.”

F1’s budget cap this year stands at $135m [£108.5m]. It is one of several mechanisms put into place recently to close up field and make races more competitive.

The Challenge Ahead

The target of becoming net-zero carbon by 2030 presents major challenges for an activity that uses internal combustion engines where cars made from carbon-fibre material produce significant waste during production and pose difficulty when recycled.

“A lot of work would need understanding: ‘Is that achievable?'” Brown said. “At the same time, you could make similar types of investments without having sustainability in mind further developing your race-car.”

The Future Of Sustainable F1 Racing

F1 is already planning on using carbon-neutral fully sustainable synthetic fuel in new engines mandated for 2026. However, McLaren believes there should be changes allowing investments into areas with long-term benefits regarding sustainability outside financial regulation compliance if immediate performance benefit opportunities arise from unsustainable sources.
