    Ferrari Unveils New Sidepod Design for Spanish Grand Prix

    Ferrari’s latest sidepod design, which debuted at the Spanish Grand Prix, has raised eyebrows among F1 fans and pundits alike. The Maranello-based team has moved away from its traditional bathtub in-wash sidepod concept to adopt a more Red Bull-style downwash solution. The decision to switch was not an easy one for Ferrari, as they had long been convinced that their original sidepod design was competitive. Carlos Sainz tried the new sidepods in opening free practice in Spain on Friday, while Charles Leclerc conducted a proper back-to-back comparison with the old versions during FP2. While it is still early days to judge short-term performance gains from the new parts, Leclerc appeared positive about his first impressions of this upgrade: “The feeling is quite okay… I think step-by-step we are trying to push more and more.” From this upgrade, Ferrari expects a modest step forward and hopes it will open doors for future development. The bathtub-like shape allowed for greater expansion before curving back down into the car’s bodywork at the rear end – creating a sort of ‘flow tunnel’ effect. In contrast, the newer downwash solution directs air outwards instead. The idea behind this is to push more air above and over the tyres to help create greater overall downforce on cornering. While both approaches aim to optimize their respective effects on aerodynamics, such discontinuity can pose certain challenges during testing and analysis phases. Time will tell whether this change ultimately helps or hinders Ferrari’s performance this season.
