The Puzzling Comeback – Great Britain Stuns Slovenia in Women’s EuroBasket 2023 Opener

In a game that left both fans and pundits scratching their heads, co-hosts Slovenia went from leading by an astonishing 18 points to losing to Great Britain with a final score of 76-71. The unexpected victory came as a shock to many who had anticipated an easy win for the Slovenians.

Despite trailing 29-11 early on in the second quarter, Team GB mounted an impressive comeback that saw them cut the deficit down to just five points by halftime. Holly Winterburn was instrumental in this effort, scoring a total of 15 points and hitting back-to-back three-pointers towards the end of the third quarter that gave her team its first lead.

Captain Temi Fagbenle’s side held off Slovenia in the fourth quarter thanks to solid performances from Kristine Anigwe, who finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds, as well as Sydney Wallace who scored another 14 points. However, it was Winterburn’s clutch shooting and overall tenacity that proved decisive for GB.

“I know we went down by eighteen,” said Winterburn after the game. “But every time they hit us we just got back up again. That’s what being British is all about – finding a way to win no matter what.”

    A Game Full Of Surprises

The match between these two teams was full of surprises right from tip-off. Despite coming into this tournament ranked one place above Great Britain at number nineteen in world rankings, Slovenia struggled against their opponents’ unrelenting defense which seemed impenetrable at times.

On paper, France may be considered favorites when they face Team GB next Friday but after Thursday’s performance, it’s clear that nothing can be taken for granted. GB will enter the matchup with newfound confidence and momentum which could pose a threat to their higher-ranked opponents.
