Introducing Danielle Gibson: England’s Promising All-Rounder for The Ashes 2023

Danielle Gibson: England’s Latest Debutant in Women’s T20

The world of cricket is abuzz with excitement as Danielle Gibson prepares to make her debut for the English women’s T20 team. This talented all-rounder is set to become the 58th player to represent England in this format during the much-awaited series opener against Australia in the multi-format Ashes series.

Gibson, at just 22 years old, has already showcased her skills on multiple occasions leading up to this momentous event. Her recent performances include an impressive score of an unbeaten sixty-two runs along with notable contributions such as a solid twenty and forty-four not out against Australia A. Furthermore, she has exhibited consistent form by registering two half-centuries and a four-wicket haul during the highly competitive Charlotte Edwards Cup held earlier this year.

Prior to earning her spot in the national squad, Gibson served as a travelling reserve for the renowned T20 World Cup in South Africa. Her dedication and commitment to the sport have now paid off as she prepares to take the field against Australia.

Introducing a new talent is always an emotional journey for both the athlete and their loved ones. In Gibson’s case, her father, Mike, shared his excitement upon receiving the call informing him of her selection. “I couldn’t control my emotions on something like that,” he confessed. Meanwhile, her older brother Greg was equally thrilled as he received a text message with the news: “‘Greg I’m in the Ashes squad’ – I just burst into tears; I was just so happy for her.”

    An Early Start

Gibson’s passion for cricket began at a young age when she would join her family in spirited back garden cricket matches. Even then, it was evident that she possessed extraordinary talent and natural ability. Her older brother Greg fondly recalls those early days, saying that Danielle would effortlessly hit balls back over their heads for sixes until they ran out of tennis balls.

Throughout school, Gibson excelled not only in cricket but also other sports such as tennis and hockey at national age-group levels where she left an indelible mark by breaking numerous records.

    A Journey Fueled by Passion

Understandably proud of his daughter’s achievements, Mike humbly attributes Gibson’s success to her innate skills rather than his own coaching prowess: “First of all I said to her just go and enjoy it because she’s got such a good eye for the ball and is powerful. I just say go and whack it.” Such encouragement from a supportive parent undoubtedly played its part in shaping Danielle Gibson into who she is today.

Gibson soon caught the attention of Gloucestershire county pathways officials who swiftly offered her opportunities within their program. Progressing through various age groups and eventually being selected for the emerging players program, her talent became increasingly evident to all.

At the tender age of fifteen, Gibson was already representing England in both cricket and hockey at age-group levels. However, she made the critical decision to focus solely on cricket – a choice that later proved fruitful when she secured a contract with Western Storm, two-time champions in the Kia Super League in 2017.

    A Star on the Rise

Gibson’s career continued its upward trajectory as she joined London Spirit in The Hundred’s inaugural season. Her impressive strike-rate of 180 and total runs scored demonstrated her ability to make an impact within this exciting new tournament format.

This year has seen Gibson thrive as vice-captain of Western Storm, leading by example with matured gameplay across all aspects. She currently stands as their joint-highest run scorer while also topping the wicket-taker charts in the highly competitive Charlotte Edwards Cup – truly cementing her status as an exceptional player.

Sophie Luff, captain of Western Storm, aptly sums up Danielle Gibson: “She’s a game-changer; she grabs the game by the scruff of the neck and takes it on.”
