ISPS Handa Championship: Lucas Herbert Triumphs, Scottish Trio Close Behind

Lucas Herbert, the Australian golfer, emerged victorious at the ISPS Handa Championship in Japan, while Scotland’s Calum Hill finished just one shot behind in third place.

Herbert and Canada’s Aaron Cockerill both ended with a score of 15 under par, resulting in a nail-biting showdown at the second extra hole.

Hill, displaying impressive skill, achieved a final round score of 65, securing third place and remaining one stroke ahead of fellow Scot, Grant Forrest.

Another standout Scottish player, Robert MacIntyre, boasted the lowest score on Sunday – a remarkable 64, which earned him a tie for sixth place alongside England’s Jordan Smith, both finishing at 11 under par for the week.

David Law, yet another Scottish competitor, had been a mere shot away from the lead after three rounds at PGM Ishioka Golf Club in Omitama. Unfortunately, his performance faltered with a disappointing 75 in the final round.

Herbert’s victorious 67-point round consisted of an eagle, three birdies, and two bogeys. Cockerill, the third-round leader, completed his round with a 68, highlighted by a remarkable sand save on the final hole.

At the first extra hole, Cockerill narrowly missed a putt from off the green, allowing Herbert to seize victory with a birdie after recovering from a wayward tee shot into the trees at the following hole.

Upon claiming his fourth career title, the 27-year-old golfer expressed his gratitude, stating, “It’s a real honor.” He continued, “Just to be back in Japan and win as well. I’ve come here so many times and loved it, so to get back here and win, it means a lot.”

Herbert also emphasized the significance of achieving success globally, adding, “I think it’s cool to be able to win everywhere and have a lot of good memories from all the spots in the world where you have played.”
