Juventus Penalized 10 Points by Serie A for Transfer Dealings

Juventus docked 10 points after new hearing into past transfer dealings

Italian giants Juventus have been hit with a major setback following a fresh inquiry into the club’s previous transfer deals. The latest ruling, which came just moments before Juventus’ clash with Empoli on Monday evening, saw the Serie A side sanctioned with a 10-point deduction. This comes in addition to the original penalty of 15-points that was handed down back in January and overturned by Italy’s highest sporting court in April.

Napoli already crowned champions as Juve slip outside European qualification spots

The team’s latest punishment sees them slide all the way down to seventh place on the Italian league table, and out of contention for any European qualification positions this season. Napoli had already secured top spot in Serie A prior to Juve’s sanctions being announced, leaving second-placed Juve trailing behind by some distance.

“Strange situation” says Allegri as former vice-chairman is acquitted

Despite their recent woes, however, Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri remains buoyant about his side’s chances going forward. “It was a strange situation,” he commented following Monday’s defeat at Empoli. “Summing up a season like this is an understatement – we have to close ranks.” Meanwhile, Pavel Nedved has now been acquitted alongside other senior officials who were originally given suspensions.

Criminal charges still pending over accounting practices

While these developments are clearly concerning for Juventus fans everywhere, they pale somewhat when compared to ongoing criminal proceedings against the club. As many as 12 current and former officials, including ex-chairman Andrea Agnelli, are potentially facing trial over their accounting practices. A high court hearing is set to take place on October 26th to determine whether any eventual trial will be held in Turin (where the investigation took place), Milan or Rome.

    Ruling sparks outrage among fans

The latest decision has caused uproar among Juventus supporters worldwide who feel that their team has been unfairly targeted by authorities. In a statement released after the ruling was handed down, Juventus expressed “great bitterness” at what they see as an overly harsh punishment that takes into account neither clear rules nor principles of proportionality.

Despite these setbacks however, there remains much for Juve fans to look forward to this season – not least of all Sunday’s clash against AC Milan where they’ll be hoping for a chance to claw back vital points in their fight for European qualification.
