Lewis Hamilton prefers traditional Barcelona track for F1 races over a potential switch to Madrid

The Discontinuous Future of Sport News: Barcelona vs Madrid

Barcelona has been a staple on the sport news calendar since 1991, but it seems its future is uncertain. This year, the final chicane has been removed in favor of high-speed Turns 13-14 to increase overtaking opportunities. However, starting from the 2026 season, there are plans to replace this circuit with a street race in Madrid.

Mystery and Intrigue Surrounding New Spanish Grand Prix Location

The rumored new venue for the Spanish Grand Prix adds an air of mystery to F1 enthusiasts everywhere. Talks between F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and backers have taken place earlier this year, raising questions about what kind of track will be designed.

Rumors say that representatives from Madrid attended last month’s Miami GP which suggests they’re seriously considering hosting an event. The addition of Jeddah, Miami, Baku and Las Vegas being popular candidates for street circuits have gotten mixed reactions among fans who don’t want their favorite “traditional” circuits replaced.

Hamilton Weighs in on Potential Losses

In an interview with bewinner.co.uk, seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton shares his thoughts on losing classic circuits: “I don’t think I would want to lose Barcelona… Budapest is spectacular. Silverstone is spectacular.”

If a potential Madrid race were indeed created as rumors suggest – instead of co-existing alongside Barcelona – it appears that there could only be room for one on the sport news calendar going forward.

Sainz Prioritizes Retaining a Spanish Presence

Fernando Alonso agrees that he would be happy racing anywhere Spain hosts events while Carlos Sainz prioritizes retaining any Spanish presence. “I just can say that I will do my maximum just to ensure that there’s still a Spanish Grand Prix independently of where,” he stated, adding that he enjoys going to Barcelona because they’ve been doing a great job hosting the event every year.

The ultimate decision is up to the regions themselves whether or not they want to host events in their respective cities. Many would love for them but if local officials don’t support it, then other regions more than likely will.
