Moeen Ali sidelined on day two of Ashes 2023 due to groin injury

England All-Rounder Moeen Ali Ruled Out of Action with a Groin Injury

In an unfortunate turn of events, England’s versatile all-rounder, Moeen Ali, has been sidelined from participating in any bowling or fielding duties on the second day of the fifth Ashes Test due to a groin injury.

The incident occurred during his batting performance on day one when he sustained the injury while running between wickets. Despite being restricted in movement, Moeen managed to showcase his resilience by striking 23 runs off just eight deliveries before eventually being bowled out.

To England’s dismay, Moeen was unable to take part in the field as Australia commenced their innings and reached a score of 61-1 in response to England’s total of 283.

This setback leaves Joe Root as the sole spin option for England on day two. Captain Ben Stokes is unlikely to contribute with pace bowling due to a knee injury; however, he did display some off-spin skills during warm-ups alongside bowling coach David Saker.

Moeen had made a comeback from retirement specifically for the Ashes after fellow spinner Jack Leach suffered an injury. Speculation arises that this may be his final appearance in Test cricket. In spite of struggling with a cut finger earlier in the series, he managed to claim three wickets in the first Test. He returned for the third match at Headingley where he played an instrumental role by securing two crucial dismissals and continued his form by taking another wicket during the fourth encounter at Old Trafford.

Additionally, Moeen showcased versatility within batting order promotions as he moved up to number three position and delivered an imperative knock of 54 runs at Old Trafford. Nevertheless, if unable to participate fully on day two due to lack of field presence, it remains uncertain whether he will retain his position in England’s second innings.

England finds themselves in a must-win situation at The Oval in order to prevent Australia from claiming an Ashes series victory on English soil for the first time since 2001.
