Norris Sets Realistic Goal: Prioritizing Race Wins Over F1 Championship Until 2026

Lando Norris: Aiming for the Top, but with Caution

In an exciting turn of events, McLaren has secured their star driver, Lando Norris, with a contract extension until at least 2027. This move reflects Norris’ determination to make his world title dream a reality. However, despite McLaren’s impressive progress last year as they emerged as serious contenders to Red Bull Racing, Norris remains cautious about immediate success.

Norris believes that McLaren has the potential to build on their multiple podium finishes in 2023. He acknowledges that there were moments when they came close to winning races last year and even challenged Red Bull Racing at times. The Briton is well aware of the competitiveness within Formula One (F1), highlighting that it was the most competitive car ever seen in the sport.

“If you want to win one race,” he says confidently, “we are the closest we’ve ever been since I’ve been here at McLaren and for many years.”

However, while winning individual races may be achievable in the near future according to him; fighting for a championship is another matter entirely. It requires taking a significant step forward both personally and as a team.

“To go straight into ‘can you win races and a championship?’ I think that’s another level,” admits Norris candidly.

Norris recognizes that racing at such high levels brings immense pressure and excitement not just for himself but also for everyone involved in the team. The mechanics face additional challenges too due to heightened expectations.

    McLaren’s Capacity to Challenge

Norris is confident that McLaren currently has the capacity to challenge any team over a single race weekend if circumstances align in their favor. However, he acknowledges that consistency may be lacking for them to do so every time.

“The majority of the time we’ve executed things extremely well,” Norris points out. “So when it comes to pressure, I think everyone here is in a very good position.”

Despite this readiness and belief in his own abilities as a driver, Norris understands that fighting for a championship brings forth different challenges and alters mindsets both within himself and the team as a whole. It requires making consistent decisions along the way while competing against formidable opponents like Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.

    The Future Holds Promise

Looking ahead, Norris sees great potential in F1’s major rules reset coming into effect from 2026 onwards. With new engines and all-new cars being introduced at that point, there will be an incredible opportunity for top teams like McLaren to seize the initiative and contend for championships.

“The championship, as much as I would love to say over the next two years, ’26 is an opportunity for everyone on the grid,'” Norris explains. “So that’s the big, big question mark. But we’ll see how we do this year and then you can ask me the question again.”

While Norris remains cautious about immediate success in his pursuit of a championship title, he firmly believes in McLaren’s potential and his own abilities to challenge racing giants like Red Bull Racing and Mercedes. Only time will tell if these aspirations become reality.
