Paul Turner Returns as ‘Part-Time Advisor’: Former Dragons Boss Makes Surprising Comeback

Paul Turner Makes Surprise Return to Dragons as Consultant

In a shocking turn of events, Paul Turner, the former Newport fly-half and director of rugby at Rodney Parade until 2011, will be making a surprise comeback to the Dragons as a part-time consultant for the remainder of the season.

Rumors surrounding his role had caused tensions within the club and head coach Dai Flanagan. However, Dragons have clarified that Turner’s involvement will strictly be off-the-pitch, focusing on advising player development and recruitment while also providing mentorship to younger coaches.

Turner expressed his excitement about being involved with Dragons again: “I’m looking forward to getting back involved with Dragons and assisting in any way I can with a club and region I have great affinity for.” He emphasized that his main commitment remains with English Championship side Ampthill where he serves as head coach.

The idea of mentoring Flanagan became a point of contention between them when it was leaked that Turner would assume a higher position. Despite this disagreement, Flanagan acknowledged their longstanding relationship: “Paul is a well-respected figure in Welsh rugby and someone I have trusted for a long time.”

A veteran in coaching circles, Turner has an impressive resume having worked with Sale Sharks, Saracens, Gloucester Rugby, Harlequins FC before joining Wasps alongside Dai Young. Currently serving as head coach at Ampthill alongside his consultancy role at Dragons.

Dragons are currently struggling in the United Rugby Championship (URC), sitting just one point above the bottom of the table and winless in their first four games.
