The world of professional golf was left in shock when PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan announced an unexpected break from his role. The reason behind this surprising decision? Anxiety.
In a recent statement, Monahan revealed that he had been dealing with anxiety which resulted in both physical and mental health challenges for him. This revelation shed light on the difficulties faced by individuals in high-pressure positions within the sports industry.
Monahan’s struggle with anxiety emerged following the proposed partnership between the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), along with the European-based DP World Tour. The announcement of this collaboration sparked controversy and triggered an ongoing investigation by the US Senate.
“I needed to step away and address my anxiety,” admitted Monahan during a press conference. “It was crucial for me to develop skills that would help me cope with these challenges moving forward.”
The suspension of his day-to-day duties occurred on June 13 as he focused on recuperating from his medical situation. After just over a month of rest, Monahan returned to resume his typical responsibilities on July 17.
Reflecting upon the controversial announcement, which led to confusion among players and fans alike, Monahan took full responsibility for any misinformation or mistrust created by it.
“As commissioner, I acknowledge my accountability in creating this situation,” stated Monahan regretfully. “I apologize specifically to our players who were caught off guard by this turn of events.”
Despite the criticism surrounding the proposed partnership, Monahan remains optimistic about its potential success.
“Ultimately, my performance will be evaluated based on results and the productivity of our organization,” he affirmed. “Once this process is complete, I am confident that it will prove to be a rewarding outcome for both PGA Tour players and our loyal fans.”
In an effort to gather player input, Monahan held a meeting with several PGA Tour players before the TPC Southwind tournament in Memphis, Tennessee. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler expressed his support for Monahan’s return.
“It’s great to have Jay back,” Scheffler said enthusiastically. “He has always been available and is working hard to ensure that he listens to as many players as possible.”
Scheffler also acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the proposed PGA Tour-LIV Golf agreement.
“As it stands now, there are still many unanswered questions regarding this collaboration,” admitted Scheffler cautiously. “We are waiting for further information and clarity on what exactly is happening.”
