Protesters disrupt Open Championship as they call for an end to oil consumption

Just Stop Oil Activists Cause Chaos at Open Championship

A group of activists from Just Stop Oil have once again made their mark by disrupting the prestigious Open Championship. On Friday, during the second round of the major tournament held at Royal Liverpool, three protestors boldly ran onto the 17th hole.

In a dramatic display, they released orange powder and set off a smoke flare before being quickly apprehended by police. The disruption caught the attention of American golfer Billy Horschel who was playing the hole at that very moment.

The protest group took to Twitter to emphasize their cause: “There will be no more holes in one when our society collapses. We must stop our government’s reckless issuance of new oil and gas licenses.” These disruptive actions are part of an ongoing campaign against environmental damage caused by fossil fuel extraction.

The R&A, organizers of the tournament, confirmed that four individuals including one protestor were arrested following this incident. However, despite this unexpected occurrence, play was not significantly disrupted thanks to the swift action taken by marshals and law enforcement.

This is not the first time Just Stop Oil has targeted sporting events in England; they previously interrupted The Ashes cricket series as well as Wimbledon and even made an appearance during the World Snooker Championship.

No Instructions Provided for Handling Protests – Jon Rahm Speaks Out

Prior to The Open Championship, world number three Jon Rahm expressed his concerns about potential protests on behalf of players. He revealed that no instructions were provided by tournament organizers regarding how to handle such disruptions.

When questioned about maintaining concentration amidst protests, Rahm admitted uncertainty. “I don’t know. I do have a reputation, so I hope they don’t catch me on a bad hole,” he responded. He acknowledged that protestors aim to create an impact and expressed his observations of their presence at Wimbledon.

Rahm also stressed the importance of avoiding any disruption in play: “You don’t want to disrupt play, which they’re trying, so if it happens where I’m at, I’m obviously going to try to clean up as quickly as possible.”

The Spanish golfer warned protestors about the potential danger of being hit by golf balls, intentionally or accidentally. With vast open spaces like golf courses providing more room for activists’ actions, Rahm cautioned against putting oneself in harm’s way during such events.
