Record-breaking Performances at the US Open: Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele Match Tournament Round Record within Half an Hour
The US Open: Record-Breaking Start for Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele
In a stunning opening round at the Los Angeles Country Club, American golfers Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele made history with their record-breaking performances. The previous lowest round score in US Open history was 63, achieved by six different golfers across the tournament’s 128-year history. However, both Fowler and Schauffele managed to surpass this feat by shooting an eight-under 62 each.
Fowler started strong, making ten birdies – including four in a row – as well as two bogeys. Despite being a five-time winner on the PGA Tour, he has yet to win a major title after finishing runner-up three times previously. With his current form improving with seven top-20 finishes in his last eight starts, can Fowler finally achieve that elusive first major?
Meanwhile, Schauffele also impressed with his bogey-free performance throughout the entire course. He hit five birdies across his final nine holes but narrowly missed out on beating Grace’s record outright when his 25-foot birdie attempt on the final hole fell just short.
Both golfers were full of praise for each other’s achievements during their post-round interviews. “It’s not surprising to see him shoot 8-under,” said Schauffele about Fowler’s remarkable performance before adding “I couldn’t be happier for him to see him in good form…he’s just a pleasure to be around.”
