Republic of Ireland Manager Anticipates Liverpool Goalkeeper’s Exit in the Upcoming Summer Transfer Window

Republic of Ireland’s goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher is set to leave Liverpool this summer, according to the national team’s manager Stephen Kenny.

    The Goalkeeper Needs Game Time

Kenny believes that leaving Anfield will be beneficial for the 24-year-old as he has been “starved of games” since making his first Premier League start this season in their match against Southampton. He thinks it’s necessary for Kelleher’s development and career progression that he gets more regular playing time elsewhere.

    A Star In The Making

Kelleher made his debut for Liverpool back in 2019 after coming through the academy. Since then, he has established himself as Jurgen Klopp’s second-choice keeper behind Alisson Becker. Last year, during Liverpool’s run in the Carabao Cup competition, Kelleher started every game and even scored a winning penalty during a shootout victory against Chelsea.

Injury And Lack Of Playtime Hindered His Progression

However, last summer saw him sidelined due to injury which ruled him out of action for two months at the beginning of this domestic campaign. With early exits from both FA Cup and Carabao Cup competitions; Kelleher struggled to get much-needed minutes on-field while being kept behind one of the best goalkeepers globally- Alisson Becker.

New Pastures Are A Must For Him To Flourish

Ireland boss Kenny admits that memories created at iconic club like Liverpool make it tough for players to move on – but with age not on his side anymore; it is crucial that he moves onto pastures new where regular playtime can help enhance his skills further.

“The previous season was a success degree-wise because there were many matches including cup competitions. However, they got knocked out early this year, and so there wasn’t much football for him. I think he’s ready to go play regularly now – he needs to play as he is not so young anymore at 24.”

Kenny believes that Kelleher’s talent can no longer be ignored; hence it’s time for the goalkeeper to move on in search of more regular playing opportunities.
