Sevilla terminate contract of head coach Diego Alonso after just nine weeks

Spanish Club Sevilla Sacks Head Coach Diego Alonso

In a surprising turn of events, Spanish club Sevilla has made the decision to terminate head coach Diego Alonso’s contract just nine weeks after his appointment. The 48-year-old Uruguayan had joined the team on October 10th but unfortunately failed to secure a single victory in both domestic and European competitions.

This news comes as quite a shock considering that Sevilla achieved their record-extending seventh Europa League title under former coach Jose Luis Mendilibar last season. However, their performance took a hit this term when they finished at the bottom of their Champions League group.

Alonso managed to secure only two wins during his short-lived tenure, both coming in the Copa del Rey against lower-league opposition. His lackluster results ultimately led to his dismissal after Saturday’s disappointing 3-0 defeat against Getafe.

Sporting director Victor Orta announced Alonso’s departure, emphasizing that results were of utmost importance for the club. He expressed deep regret over having to make such a difficult decision.

This marks Sevilla’s fourth managerial change since October last year and leaves them currently sitting at 16th place in La Liga. Under Alonso’s guidance, they have suffered three defeats and five draws out of eight league games played so far.
