Sparta Prague vs Rangers: Philippe Clement Aims for European Triumph in Europa League Clash

Rangers’ European Struggles Continue as They Face Sparta Prague

In their upcoming Europa League clash against Sparta Prague, Rangers find themselves in a relatively better position compared to their last away game in Cyprus against Aris Limassol. However, the team’s recent performance has drawn attention to their ongoing struggles on the European stage.

Steven Davis took charge temporarily as manager after Michael Beale’s departure, but unfortunately, his debut was met with disappointment. The players who played a part in Beale’s downfall failed to deliver yet again and suffered another defeat away from home.

When it comes to Rangers’ away form in Europe, the statistics paint a grim picture. The team has lost their last seven matches on the road in both Europa League and Champions League competitions since their impressive victory over Borussia Dortmund back in February 2022.

This win is actually their only triumph out of twelve games played in these tournaments during that period. Alongside one win, they have also managed three draws and eight losses. In fact, Rangers have faced defeat in nine out of their last eleven away matches (including qualifiers), with only two exceptions – a narrow victory against PSV Eindhoven last season and a draw with Servette this year.

Their victories over Eindhoven and Dortmund are also notable for being the only ones achieved across eighteen games during their recent European travels. During this time frame, they have registered five draws alongside eleven losses.

If Rangers aim to progress further into the Europa League or even secure top spot within their group, these numbers need significant improvement. The team’s remarkable journey to the final two seasons ago serves as a reminder that early setbacks do not necessarily define their campaign. Despite losing against Sparta Prague in their opening group game, they managed to overcome adversity and came agonizingly close to triumphing in Seville.

Rangers’ recent managerial history reflects the level of chaos following Steven Gerrard’s departure for Aston Villa after leading them to the league title in 2021. Since then, the club has experienced three permanent managers and two interim bosses.

Philippe Clement is now tasked with restoring stability and success at Rangers. While his team showed improved energy levels during their recent victory over Hibernian, Clement emphasizes that further improvements are necessary if they want to compete for domestic silverware and excel in European competitions.

The return of Todd Cantwell, even as a substitute for just thirty minutes, highlighted his importance as he contributed significantly through movement, awareness, and precise forward passes. However, another absence felt by the team was midfielder Tom Lawrence who remains sidelined due to injury since Beale’s time in charge.

Sam Lammers and Cyriel Dessers have faced criticism for underwhelming performances this season but indicated signs of improvement during Saturday’s match. Dessers displayed more confidence when converting his goal despite earlier struggles while Lammers played a significant role in creating opportunities.

Both players will have another chance on Thursday evening against Sparta Prague to win over Clement and gain support from Rangers fans. However, defeating an opponent known for its strong home record will be no easy task.
