Spinning Sensation Liam Dawson Spins his Way to Ashes Contention

Spinning all-rounder Dawson makes a statement for Ashes selection

In a County Championship match between Hampshire and Middlesex, Liam Dawson proved his worth as an all-rounder by scoring a century and taking six wickets. This performance is bound to put him in contention for the upcoming Ashes series this summer.

Dawson had been overlooked by England selectors when Moeen Ali was recalled from retirement ahead of him, but he showed his class with both bat and ball in this game.

The numbers behind Dawson’s rise to prominence

This season has been particularly successful for the spinning all-rounder. He has taken 16 wickets so far – more than any other English spinner who is fit and qualified to play. His batting has also been impressive, with 384 runs putting him in the top 30 of batsmen in the top tier.

Dawson’s experience also sets him apart from other contenders for a place on the team sheet. He has played consistently at county level for several years now, honing his craft as both a batsman and bowler.

    A dominant display against Middlesex

In this game against Middlesex, Dawson started off with an impressive double-wicket maiden over which set up Hampshire nicely. The opposition never fully recovered after that early blow.

Despite Sam Robson’s valiant effort of scoring 38 off 81 balls, Middlesex struggled throughout their innings thanks to some tight bowling from both ends coupled with exaggerated bounce added by Liam Dawson later on.

Dawson’s six-wicket haul was a testament to his skill and experience. He picked up wickets regularly, with Ryan Higgins, John Simpson, and Luke Hollman all falling victim to his spin bowling.

The day started with Dawson at the crease

Earlier in the innings, Hampshire had been bowled out for 419 by Middlesex. But Liam Dawson and Nick Gubbins put together an impressive fifth-wicket stand which helped them reach this total.

Dawson’s century came with a steer down to third after a long vigil of 277 balls – by far the slowest of his 15 first-class centuries.

    A bright future ahead?

The future looks bright for Liam Dawson as he continues to impress both with bat and ball. His recent performances are bound to have caught the attention of England selectors once again as they look towards selecting their squad for this summer’s Ashes series against Australia.
