Stella predicts F1 development curve will level off in the midst of third year under current regulations

The 2023 F1 Season: Increasing Competition and Diminishing Returns

In the world of Formula 1, the 2023 season is shaping up to be one of the most fiercely competitive in history. While Max Verstappen and Red Bull have dominated the rules cycle thus far, other teams have been closing in on their performance.

As teams head into the third year of stable regulations, there is a sense that progress may start to slow down. Andrea Stella, Team Principal at McLaren, believes that after two years of rapid development across all teams, we may see diminishing returns when it comes to aerodynamic advancements.

“I think this year will mark a turning point with these new regulations,” Stella shared during a recent press conference. “For the past two years, we have witnessed significant progress in aerodynamic development. However, I anticipate that towards the end of this season, designers will face challenges maintaining such steep development rates.”

McLaren experienced a remarkable turnaround in 2023’s mid-season and finished fourth overall. But as more teams adopt a design philosophy similar to Red Bull’s successful approach, Stella expects gaps between teams to narrow even further.

Beyond just becoming an increasingly tight race measured by millimeters on track surfaces alone; F1’s budget cap and aerodynamic testing restrictions are also set to level out competition amongst constructors.

“Over time,” Stella explained thoughtfully,”hopefully both the budget cap and aerodynamic restrictions will contribute towards creating a level playing field for all teams. Cars that excel in the championship will have limited aerodynamic testing available, which should make the sport more exciting and competitive.”

As F1 continues to evolve, it’s clear that the 2023 season presents unique challenges for teams across the grid. With diminishing returns on aero development looming and increased competition among constructors, fans can expect an exhilarating battle as each team strives to gain any advantage they can.
