Vasseur: Discussing Hamilton news with Sainz presented significant challenges

Carlos Sainz to Remain Dedicated to Ferrari Despite Seat Loss

In a surprising turn of events, Carlos Sainz has been replaced by Lewis Hamilton in the upcoming season. The news came as a shock not only to Sainz but also to his close friend and Mercedes team principal, Toto Wolff.

Facing the daunting task of delivering the bad news, Frederic Vasseur, Team Principal and General Manager at Scuderia Ferrari, compared it humorously with making that very first call to Toto Wolff. Although undoubtedly disappointed in losing his seat, Vasseur believes that Sainz will remain fully dedicated to the Ferrari cause this year.

“As you can imagine, it was not an easy call for me – one of the most difficult ones I’ve had so far! But I have full confidence in Carlos’s professionalism,” said Vasseur when asked about breaking the news. “He understands that we have a long season ahead and this is a huge opportunity for him. We had a lengthy discussion and I will continue supporting him wholeheartedly.”

Vasseur went on further to elaborate on Sainz’s commitment: “I am convinced that Carlos will give his utmost dedication until the very last lap of this season. Likewise, our entire team remains motivated and stands behind him as he has done an exceptional job thus far.”

The arrival of Lewis Hamilton brings new challenges and opportunities for Ferrari. While refraining from delving into too much detail regarding Tuesday’s car launch announcement or their long-term plans involving Hamilton, Vasseur did acknowledge its significance:

“The announcement of Lewis joining our team presents a tremendous opportunity for us. We are confident that he will contribute significantly to our future endeavors. However, we must stay focused on the present and not allow any distractions. This is precisely why we made the early announcement – to ensure our full concentration on the upcoming season.”

When questioned about Sainz having to make way for Hamilton, Vasseur responded: “Unfair? I wouldn’t use that term. Consideration had to be given by the team regarding Lewis’s opportunity due to his extensive experience in Formula One. Carlos has performed exceptionally well and our personal relationship remains strong. But circumstances are what they are, and as a team, we must look towards the future.”
