Rugby Union Competition Launching in October
In an exciting development for women’s rugby, a new competition called WXV is set to launch in October. This three-tier event aims to provide consistent annual fixtures outside of World Cup years, ensuring that teams have regular opportunities to showcase their skills.
England vs New Zealand – Clash of the Titans!
The highly anticipated finale of WXV will feature a showdown between England and world champions New Zealand. The Mount Smart Stadium in Auckland has been chosen as the venue for this thrilling match, which promises to be a repeat of the intense battle witnessed during the 2021 World Cup final. In that encounter, New Zealand emerged victorious with a narrow margin of 34-31 against England.
Welsh Campaign Begins Against Canada
Wales embarks on their WXV1 campaign with an opening clash against Canada in Wellington. The Welsh team is eager to make their mark and show their mettle on this international stage.
Captivating Matches Across Different Tiers
This multi-tiered tournament features six countries per tier who have qualified through continental tournaments and play-offs. Each tier comprises two pools where teams compete against each other before progressing based on points earned from matches played.
Pools and Fixtures:
- WXV1: In one pool we have England, Wales, and France, who will face off against Australia, Canada, and New Zealand from the other pool. The matches for this tier will be held on the weekends of 20/21 October in Wellington, 27/28 October in Dunedin, and 3/4 November in Auckland.
- WXV2: Scotland, Italy and Samoa form one pool while South Africa, Japan and USA make up the other. Their matches are scheduled to take place in Stellenbosch on the weekend of 13/14 October before moving to Cape Town on 20/21 and 27/28 October.
- WXV3: Ireland, Kenya and Fiji are grouped together with Kazakhstan , Columbia ,and Spain making up their opponents. These games will be played at Dubai’s The Sevens Stadium during the weekends of 13/14 ,20/21,and 27 /28 October.
