Shriever targets historic fourth BMX world title
Beth Shriever arrives at the BMX Racing World Championships in Brisbane as the three-time women’s elite World Champion and the sole British entry in her event. The Briton, who won her most recent title in 2025, has claimed three of the past five world crowns but has never retained one. She now aims to become the first rider to be crowned World Champion four times.
The championships take place in Australia for the fourth time, with thousands of elite riders competing this weekend. Saya Sakakibara will race in front of her home crowd in Brisbane as she tries to take the crown from Shriever and claim her first World Championship title. The Australian is the current Olympic Champion and three-time reigning World Cup champion.
British men face long wait for elite title
Kye Whyte and Ross Cullen carry British hopes in the men’s elite race, where no Briton has won since Liam Phillips triumphed in Auckland in 2013. Whyte, the 2020 Olympic silver medalist and 2022 World Championships silver medalist, is looking to improve on last season’s quarter-final exit. Cullen missed last season through injury but enters the championships in good form.
The men’s field has been weakened by withdrawals. Reigning champion Arthur Pilard and current Olympic champion Joris Daudet are among three former World Champions forced out through injury. Paris 2024 Olympic bronze medalist Romain Mahieu of France remains in the reduced pool, and American Cameron Wood is also among the favourites after finishing third in last year’s World Cup.
