Four British race meetings abandoned as red heat warning takes effect
Four fixtures scheduled for Wednesday have been called off.
The Met Office issued a rare red warning for extreme heat across parts of England and Wales, with temperatures possibly reaching up to 38 °C.
Under British Horseracing Authority policy any racecourse inside a red warning zone must abandon its fixture, and horses cannot be transported from or through the affected areas.
Worcester’s National Hunt card and the Flat meetings at Salisbury and Kempton all lie inside the warning zone.
Ffos Las in Wales sits just outside the zone, but participants would have to travel through the high‑risk area to reach the course.
The BHA has confirmed new dates for the abandoned meetings.
Ffos Las will run on Monday 29 June.
Kempton Park will race on Monday evening.
Salisbury will race on Tuesday 30 June.
Carlisle’s meeting in Cumbria remains on schedule, featuring the historic Carlisle Bell and Cumberland Plate.
Thursday’s fixtures at Nottingham and Newmarket, both in amber alert zones, have been moved earlier to avoid the hottest part of the day.
Nottingham will start at 10:30 and finish by 13:00.
Newmarket will begin at 10:45 and end at 13:15.
The 2 m Dereham Handicap has been shifted to Friday.
The BHA says it will continue to liaise with racecourses hosting fixtures in amber warning zones this week to consider any further procedures that may be needed.
