Acosta Dismisses Title Contention Talk as MotoGP Rookie

Pedro Acosta: The Rising Star of MotoGP

The grand prix paddock has been abuzz with excitement surrounding Pedro Acosta, the talented 19-year-old Spaniard who burst onto the scene in Moto3 in 2021. In just his second race, he clinched a sensational victory despite starting from pitlane, setting the stage for what was to come.

After an impressive stint in Moto2 with the KTM-backed Ajo squad, Acosta secured both the championship title and a coveted spot on Tech3 for his MotoGP debut in 2024. His meteoric rise through the ranks has drawn comparisons to none other than Marc Marquez himself, making his rookie season one of the most highly anticipated in recent memory.

In his first official test on the GasGas-branded KTM at Valencia last week, Acosta showed great promise by finishing just 1.2 seconds off the pace. However, he humbly downplayed any expectations of immediately challenging for the championship:

“I hope not too many,” he joked when asked about how soon he would be able to contend for the MotoGP title.

Acosta understands that it would be premature to make predictions based on a single day of testing and recognizes that next year will bring fierce competition:

“The bike is going to be so competitive. I don’t know what will happen next year, but it’s going to be soon. The amount of work being put into the bike is unimaginable, and it will be incredibly fast,” he said.

Despite the hype surrounding his debut, Acosta appreciates that KTM has not burdened him with excessive pressure. He commends the Austrian manufacturer for their unwavering support:

“In both the team and the brand, no one has compared me to anyone else. I am grateful for this approach because having expectations placed on you can be challenging,” he expressed.

Acosta emphasizes that everyone in his team and within Pierer Mobility Group wholeheartedly believes in him regardless of results:

“This level of trust is crucial. My crew chief Paul has been with me since Pol Espargaro’s time. He always tells me that if there are any changes I want to make, he’s here to support me. But I tell him ‘no, I’m here for you.’ He knows how to guide my riding style and understands all the essential aspects of bike preparation.”

The young racer feels fortunate to be surrounded by such an amazing group of individuals who are willing to help him reach new heights in MotoGP.
