Ajax Hopes to Bounce Back in 2023-24 Season
The upcoming 2023-24 season brings a sense of bitterness for Ajax as they aim to rectify the mistakes made during their previous campaign.
After an unfortunate third-place finish behind Feyenoord and PSV, Ajax found themselves missing out on Champions League qualification and losing the cup final – marking their first absence from Europe’s elite club competition since 2017.
This situation raises concerns due to the financial implications tied to Champions League participation and player sales, which have been crucial for sustaining the club’s operations.
In recent times, Ajax has witnessed several departures of key players such as Lisandro Martinez, Antony, and Sebastien Haller. They also experienced an unsuccessful stint with Alfred Schreuder as head coach before appointing former Everton defender John Heitinga on an interim basis.
Although Heitinga initially showed promise, his temporary tenure ended when it became clear that a permanent role was not warranted. Furthermore, Edwin van der Sar stepped down from his position as CEO after making questionable decisions over the past year and a half.
However, it seems that even more exits are expected this summer. Prominent European clubs are eyeing talented individuals from Ajax who are enticed by the prospect of participating in the Champions League and receiving lucrative offers elsewhere – incentivizing them to potentially leave the Amsterdam-based club.
One of the most notable players likely to be sold is defender Jurrien Timber, who appears to be on the verge of a move to Arsenal. Timber’s impressive development has garnered attention across Europe, leading him to become a regular for the Dutch national team under managers Louis van Gaal and Ronald Koeman.
Last year, former Ajax coach Erik ten Hag attempted to convince Timber to join Manchester United. However, Timber declined and instead Ten Hag brought in Martinez as an alternative option.
Timber’s exceptional ball control, versatility in playing multiple positions, and maturity beyond his years have caught the eye of Mikel Arteta at Arsenal. The Gunners are eager to secure his services before their own return to Champions League action. Reports suggest that Arsenal’s next bid could range from €40-45 million (£34.5-39 million), but Ajax may hold out for closer to €55 million (£47.5 million), including bonuses.
Ajax has historically been known for their tough negotiation stance – evident in their prolonged transfers of Martinez and Antony last season which respectively earned them €67 million (£58 million) and €100 million (£86.5 million).
While it is true that Timber shares some responsibility for Ajax’s disappointing campaign, many firmly believe that his potential justifies a significant investment on behalf of any interested parties such as Arsenal – making him a valuable addition for the Gunners at just 22 years old.
