Alex Marquez: Ducati’s MotoGP Team Provides a Sense of Significance

The Journey of the Moto2 Champion: From Honda to Ducati

In a surprising move, the 2019 Moto2 champion has made a switch to Gresini Ducati for the upcoming 2023 season. After facing challenges during his two-year stint with LCR Honda in 2021-22, where he failed to match his podium performance from 2020 while riding for the factory HRC team, this change marks a new chapter in his career.

During his time with LCR Honda, Marquez experienced highs and lows. He managed to secure his maiden pole position in MotoGP during the second round in Argentina and went on to win two races while also achieving two podium finishes at other grands prix. However, despite these successes, Marquez felt that something was missing.

When asked about how he feels as a Ducati rider compared to being with Honda last year, Marquez expressed immense satisfaction. He stated that he already has his sights set on next season and is optimistic about what lies ahead.

“These last few races after my injury were all about preparing for next year,” said Marquez. “We experimented with different setups that have proven effective. We consistently finished within the top five throughout these races, and that will be our objective for next year.”

Reflecting on the past season as a whole, Marquez acknowledged some setbacks but remained positive overall: “We didn’t have much luck in the first part of the season. However, looking at our results, speed and my comfort level within the team and alongside Ducati – it’s been an undeniably positive season.”

The difference between having a competitive bike like Ducati makes all aspects of racing more enjoyable for riders like Marquez who thrive off such conditions: “Having an environment where you feel supported is crucial,” he added. “Last year, I felt somewhat alone in the LCR box with my team and without the backing of Honda. That’s what pushed me to my limits.”

Marquez expressed gratitude towards Ducati for their comprehensive approach in explaining everything and conducting detailed analyses, making him feel valued as a rider: “The way Ducati involves you and makes you an integral part of the process is something that all riders appreciate.”

In 2024, Marquez will continue his journey with Gresini on a year-old Ducati package. This time, he will be joined by none other than his elder brother Marc Marquez. While they briefly shared a garage at the factory Honda squad in 2020 during Alex Marquez’s debut season, their partnership was cut short due to Marc’s unfortunate injury.

This new chapter not only presents an exciting opportunity for both brothers to race alongside each other but also promises great potential for Gresini Racing as they strive for success in future seasons.
