Alfie Hewett Secures Second British Open Wheelchair Title with Victory over Joachim Gerard

British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships: Hewett Claims Victory

In a stunning display of dominance, British number one Alfie Hewett secured his second men’s singles title at the British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships. The final was an absolute rout as Hewett dropped just two games in a one-sided match against Belgium’s Joachim Gerard.

The entire match lasted only 51 minutes, with Hewett emerging triumphant with a resounding scoreline of 6-0, 6-2. Reflecting on his victory, a delighted Wimbledon runner-up said, “The last three singles finals I’ve been in ended up on the wrong side, so it was nice to turn it around.”

Doubles Success and Grand Slam Pursuit

Hewett didn’t stop there; he also clinched the men’s doubles crown alongside his partner Gordon Reid. This dynamic duo is now eyeing an exceptional calendar doubles Grand Slam at this year’s US Open after already triumphing at the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon.

In their quest for glory, they fought back from being down a set to extend their remarkable winning streak to an impressive total of 27 matches. Their opponents were Spain’s Martin de la Puente and Argentina’s Gustavo Fernandez but proved no match for the unstoppable British pair.

“It’s been an incredible summer,” added Hewett, who is currently ranked second in the world in singles and first in doubles. “Gordon and I have had quite a memorable one. I think it’s going to be up there as one of the ones we look back on as one of those special years.”

Women’s Doubles Final: Heartbreak for Shuker and Mathewson

In the women’s doubles final, British player Lucy Shuker and her American partner Dana Mathewson were unable to secure victory. They lost out to Dutch top seeds Jiske Griffioen and Diede de Groot with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-2.

De Groot Claims Fourth British Open Title

Diede de Groot continued her reign of dominance by clinching her fourth British Open women’s singles title. The Dutch player convincingly defeated China’s Zhenzhen Zhu with an overwhelming scoreline of 6-1, 6-0.

    An Unforgettable Summer

This year has undoubtedly been extraordinary for Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid as they continue their trailblazing journey through wheelchair tennis. With their recent triumphs at various Grand Slam tournaments, including their remarkable performance at the British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships, this is a season that will forever hold a special place in their hearts.
