Alfie Hewett Successfully Defends Men’s Wheelchair Title at US Open

In a thrilling match filled with suspense and determination, Great Britain’s Alfie Hewett emerged victorious as he successfully defended his men’s wheelchair title against his doubles partner Gordon Reid at the prestigious US Open.

Hewett displayed exceptional control throughout the match, overpowering Reid with a remarkable scoreline of 6-4, 6-3. The triumph marks Hewett’s eighth Grand Slam singles title and an impressive fourth win at Flushing Meadows.

“It feels like I’m living in a dream to play on this grand stage and hold the trophy for the fourth time,” expressed an elated Hewett. Recognizing his opponent’s skills and resilience, he added, “Congratulations to you [Reid] for your outstanding performance this week. It is truly gratifying to see you back in a final where you belong.”

The duo of Hewett and Reid have been dominant in their partnership, securing an impressive tally of 18 major doubles titles. However, this was their first encounter in a Grand Slam final against each other – adding another level of intrigue to their rivalry.

Prior to the highly anticipated face-off, Hewett emphasized that there were “no secrets” between them. The closely contested battle showcased fine margins determining each point on Louis Armstrong Stadium; yet it was ultimately Hewett’s experience that shone through in the end.

Reid initially made an impactful start, breaking Hewett’s serve in the opening game. However, Hewett steadily regained his composure and managed to break back in the fourth game, leveling the set at 2-2.

Despite a momentary frustration as he missed a break point at 4-3, Hewett sealed the first set three games later when Reid faltered with a double-fault. The second set mirrored their initial exchange, with Reid securing an early break only for Hewett to respond immediately by breaking his opponent’s serve.

Hewett further asserted his dominance by taking another crucial service game from Reid to lead 5-2. With victory within reach and immense pressure mounting on both players, it was ultimately Hewett who remained composed and served out the match flawlessly – winning every point without any response from his opponent.

This triumph marks Hewett’s second Grand Slam singles success of the year; having previously secured victory at the Australian Open earlier in January. However, he faced disappointment at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon finals this season.

In contrast, Reid had not reached a major singles final since 2019 when he emerged victorious at Roland Garros. His previous two titles were achieved during Wimbledon and Australian Open campaigns back in 2016.

“Congratulations Alfie! Your exceptional performance throughout this week truly deserves this title,” acknowledged Reid graciously after their intense battle on court. Reflecting on his own performance, he added humbly: “I’m disappointed with my level today as things didn’t go according to plan; however, I’ll analyze this experience and come back even stronger next year.”

While they never met each other before in a singles final of such magnitude during their careers thus far – interestingly enough – they did cross paths once at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio. On that occasion, Reid emerged victorious, securing a gold medal with a commanding scoreline of 6-2 and 6-1 against Hewett.
