Alun Wyn Jones Bids Farewell with Toulon Amidst Thunderous Applause

Former Wales Captain Alun Wyn Jones Ends Career with a Victory for Toulon

Alun Wyn Jones, the legendary former captain of the Welsh rugby team, bid farewell to his 19-year career in style as he led Toulon to a thrilling victory. The 38-year-old lock was appointed captain by Toulon in their Top 14 fixture against Clermont Auvergne, which they won 30-27.

In a heartwarming moment, both teams applauded Jones off the field after he played for 66 minutes. However, much to everyone’s surprise, he reappeared as a late replacement during the final two minutes and contributed to setting up the winning try.

Jones holds an incredible record as the most capped player in history. With an impressive total of 170 international appearances including matches for the British and Irish Lions and participation in four World Cups, his legacy is unparalleled.

    A Remarkable Journey

The seasoned athlete earned an astounding 158 caps while representing Wales before retiring from international rugby back in May. Shortly afterward, he joined French club Toulon in July on temporary basis as injury cover for the World Cup.

“I never imagined I would find myself here at this stage of my career,” expressed Jones gratefully. “I am truly thankful to Toulon for their warm welcome since my arrival.” “Though I have only been part of this amazing team for four months, I understand that my impact may not be comparable to other foreign players who have graced this club. However, the warmth and support I have received from the fans and the city of Toulon has been truly special,” he added with a smile.

    A Farewell Gift

Prior to the match, Clermont presented Jones with a shirt as a token of appreciation. Midway through the second half, amidst roaring cheers from the Stade Marcel-Michelin crowd, he was replaced on the field while receiving yet another standing ovation.

Jones had spent an exceptional 17 years at Welsh region Ospreys before departing in summer 2023. As part of his farewell to Welsh rugby enthusiasts, he captained Barbarians against Wales in Cardiff just earlier this month.

    Updates on Dan Biggar

In other news related to Toulon’s squad changes, fly-half Dan Biggar was still unable to participate due a lingering back injury. The talented player recently retired from international rugby but continues to recover and is expected to rejoin his team soon.
