In a thrilling showdown at the season-ending WTA Finals in Cancun, Mexico, world number one Aryna Sabalenka emerged victorious against Elena Rybakina to secure her place in the semifinals. Despite stormy weather causing play suspension, both players displayed exceptional skills and determination.

The match began with Sabalenka dominating the first set with a commanding lead of 6-2. However, as play resumed after the weather delay, Rybakina quickly leveled the tie by winning the second set with an impressive scoreline of 6-3.

The tension was palpable as they entered into a decisive third set. Both athletes fought fiercely for every point until finally, it was Sabalenka who prevailed with a final score of 6-2, 3-6, and ultimately claiming victory with a resolute performance that showcased her unwavering determination on court.

“I didn’t really think a lot about this match,” expressed Sabalenka during an interview with Tennis Channel. “I was just like, whatever. I’m going to go out there and do everything I can and if I win, well then great! But if I lose… well then it’s time for a vacation. I was just focused on playing my best.”

The Belarusian tennis sensation is now set to retain her coveted world number one ranking if she advances to the finals, further solidifying her status as one of the game’s elite players.

Sabalenka joins American group winner Jessica Pegula in the semifinals, while Rybakina and eighth-seeded Greek Maria Sakkari are eliminated from the group stage.

In the other group, all four players remain in contention for a spot in the semifinals. US Open champion Coco Gauff will face Wimbledon winner Marketa Vondrousova, while world number two Iga Swiatek – this year’s French Open champion – will take on Ons Jabeur later today.
