Azure Blue sets sights on Champions Day target

Michael Dods Targets Qipco British Champions Day with Azure Blue

In a surprising turn of events, trainer Michael Dods has ruled out star filly Azure Blue from a potential outing this weekend. The four-year-old had an impressive start to her campaign, securing victory in Listed company at Newmarket and narrowly defeating Highfield Princess in the Duke of York Stakes.

However, disappointment struck when she finished sixth in the Group One July Cup and subsequently missed the Nunthorpe at York due to a minor foot problem. This setback prevented her from making an appearance at either Saturday’s Betfair Sprint Cup at Haydock or the Flying Five at the Curragh on Sunday.

Dods explained, “We’ve encountered a bit of an issue with Azure Blue. Although she seems fine now, we didn’t believe she would be ready for this weekend’s races.” He further elaborated on her challenges: “She suffered from a foot problem prior to York and later developed ulcer issues which needed attention.”

The Darlington-based trainer expressed contentment regarding her condition but admitted that racing this weekend was not feasible.

Azure Blue’s future plans now revolve around participating in the British Champions Sprint on October 21 or taking an extended break until next season. Dods mentioned that if it weren’t for Ascot, they might consider giving her time off until next year: “That would be our plan—leaving her be until next season. It is disappointing but there will always be another opportunity once she is fully fit.”

    Newmarket Victory Sets Promising Tone

Azure Blue made headlines earlier this season with an incredible comeback victory in Listed company at Newmarket. Her triumph created anticipation among fans and experts alike about what lay ahead for the talented filly.

Despite narrowly missing out on a victory in the Duke of York Stakes, Azure Blue showcased her potential by finishing just ahead of Highfield Princess. The close competition only fueled excitement for her next races.

Foot Problem and Ulcer Issues Disrupt Progress

Azure Blue faced setbacks when stepping up to Group One level for the July Cup. However, it was after this race that she encountered problems with a minor foot injury and later developed ulcers. These unexpected issues prompted Dods to reevaluate their racing plans and prioritize her full recovery instead.

Azure Blue’s Future Hangs in the Balance

With Michael Dods carefully monitoring Azure Blue’s condition, her future participation now hinges on either the British Champions Sprint or taking time off until next season. The decision will be made based on her complete recovery.

Dods acknowledged his disappointment but remains optimistic about Azure Blue’s prospects: “Although we couldn’t race this weekend, there will always be another day. We look forward to seeing her perform at 100%.”
