Backing Edwardstone to Excel in Extended Distance Races

Edwardstone Seeks Redemption in Coral Silviniaco Conti Chase

In an exciting turn of events, Tom Cannon is filled with optimism as Edwardstone takes on the challenge of the Coral Silviniaco Conti Chase at Kempton. This ten-year-old gelding, trained by Alan King, has encountered tough competition in his recent outings over two miles against the impressive Jonbon.

However, there might be a glimmer of hope for Edwardstone as he narrows the gap between himself and Jonbon. Despite finishing behind him in the Tingle Creek and Shloer Chase this season, Edwardstone’s performance was notably improved in the Tingle Creek compared to his seasonal reappearance.

This Saturday will mark Edwardstone’s first attempt over two and a half miles since April 2021 when he competed in hurdles. Tom Cannon believes that this step up in trip is a logical move given Edwardstone’s age and current form.

“Although he hasn’t had experience running this distance over fences, we saw how well he performed over two and a half miles during his third-place finish at Aintree last year,” explains Cannon confidently.

The decision to race at Kempton signifies a return to slightly less challenging waters after competing against top-class horses like those found in the Tingle Creek field. However, it should be noted that even though competition may not be as fierce, strong contenders still await them on Saturday.

“It remains a competitive race where only his best will secure victory,” admits Cannon realistically.

An Optimistic Outlook Following Recent Performances

Edwardstone has consistently shown his best performances at Sandown, and there is hope that his recent outing in the Tingle Creek indicates a return to form after running well.

Cannon praises Edwardstone’s display in the Tingle Creek, stating, “It was as good a run as he had put in for a long time. He felt back to his best.”

The ten-year-old gelding seems refreshed and ready for the upcoming challenge. Cannon expresses his satisfaction with Edwardstone’s condition and preparation.

“He hasn’t been overworked throughout his career, which has definitely worked to our advantage,” says Cannon appreciatively.

Last Thursday’s training session showcased Edwardstone’s excellent jumping ability, leaving no doubts regarding this aspect of their performance on Saturday.

Cannon concludes optimistically, “With him feeling fresh and performing well during training, I couldn’t be happier with him.”
