Bayer Leverkusen: The Rise of Xabi Alonso’s Resilient Squad, Posing a Threat to Harry Kane and Bayern Munich

The Bundesliga Surprise: Bayer Leverkusen Outshines Bayern Munich

Amidst all the talk about Harry Kane’s extraordinary goal-scoring achievements, it may come as a surprise that Bayern Munich is not leading the Bundesliga this season. Instead, it is Bayer Leverkusen who have taken command and outperformed even the perennial champions.

Leverkusen has been on an unprecedented winning streak, triumphing in all but one of their seventeen matches across various competitions. Their incredible run includes twelve consecutive victories. The only blemish on their record was a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Bayern back in September.

In terms of league standings, they currently sit at the top with 31 points from eleven games – two points ahead of second-placed Bayern. This achievement equals Pep Guardiola’s legendary start to his reign at Bayern during the formidable 2015-16 season.

Impressively, Leverkusen’s dominance extends beyond domestic affairs. They have excelled in the Europa League as well, securing qualification for the last sixteen with two group stage matches to spare after winning all four opening fixtures.

Under the astute management of former Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern midfielder Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen appears unstoppable this season. With a rich history spanning over 119 years without ever lifting their hands on a Bundesliga trophy before now appears to be within reach for them.

Xabi Alonso’s Remarkable Journey from Player to Coach

Xabi Alonso retired from professional football in 2017 following an illustrious career that saw him claim numerous honors, including the World Cup, European Championship, two Champions League titles, three Bundesligas, and a La Liga title. In 2018, he made his foray into coaching by taking charge of Real Madrid’s under-14s.

The 41-year-old then spent three years as coach of Real Sociedad’s B team in his native Basque country before assuming the role of Leverkusen’s head coach in October 2022. At that time, Leverkusen found themselves languishing near the bottom of the Bundesliga after reaching the final of the Champions League just years ago.

Although Alonso’s impact was not immediate – with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Schalke in his debut match followed by a six-match winless streak – it wasn’t long before he instilled his winning mentality on the squad. A remarkable unbeaten run towards season end propelled them to an impressive sixth-place finish and secured Europa League qualification – form which has continued this year.

Leverkusen Overcomes Challenges and Emerges Victorious

Despite facing tough opponents early on in their campaign, Leverkusen showed resilience and determination. They netted three goals each against RB Leipzig and local rivals Borussia Monchengladbach in their opening two Bundesliga matches this season.

A visit to Bayern during Oktoberfest could have been daunting; however, instead of being overwhelmed by festivities off-field distractions they twice fought back from behind to secure a draw.

Since then, Leverkusen has showcased sheer dominance across all encounters. They have amassed an impressive tally of 34 goals in just eleven Bundesliga matches – second only to Kane-powered Bayern Munich.

An Unmatched Attack Powered By Xabi Alonso’s Tactics

In terms of offensive prowess, Leverkusen has not only matched but surpassed Bayern’s performance. They have unleashed 182 shots on goal, second only to the mighty Bavarians with 215 attempts. Furthermore, their expected goals (xG) stands at a commendable 27.8 compared to Bayern’s 34.0, indicating that they are currently overperforming according to statistical projections.

Xabi Alonso’s tactical masterstroke lies in Leverkusen’s devastating counter-attacking prowess within their preferred formation of 3-4-3. The team has scored an impressive seven league goals during fast breaks – the highest in the Bundesliga this season.

Leading the line is striker Victor Boniface who boasts a staggering tally of 57 shots on goal – significantly more than Kane’s respectable figure of 41 attempts. While he may have accumulated fewer goals so far (7 compared to Kane’s outstanding haul of 17), his relentless drive and supply-line support from his teammates highlight Leverkusen’s faith in feeding him opportunities for eventual success.
