Burrows highlights rapid circumstances following Hukum’s Arc solar eclipse

Owen Burrows Left Frustrated as Hukum Falters in Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe

Owen Burrows found himself disappointed with the challenging conditions at ParisLongchamp that hindered Hukum’s performance in the prestigious Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Despite his stellar season in 2023, where he triumphed in the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot, Hukum struggled to make an impact due to an unfavorable draw and drying ground.

The Shadwell-owned horse, a son of Sea The Stars, faced a disadvantage starting from stall 14. Jockey Jim Crowley did his best to position him well but the unseasonably dry track proved too difficult for Hukum. As the race progressed, he faded through the field and finished ninth.

“The draw didn’t work in our favor, but credit to Jim for getting him into a good position. Unfortunately, the ground was just too quick,” expressed Burrows about their disappointing campaign.

The unexpected warm weather created challenging circumstances reminiscent of July rather than October. However, luck favored them earlier when King George had favorable conditions with good-to-soft ground. Despite this setback during Arc weekend, they remain grateful for their previous successes.

“He’s only had three runs this season and managed impressive victories in both Brigadier Gerard and King George races,” said Burrows appreciatively. “We can’t be disappointed at all; he has been exceptional throughout his career so far.”

Hukum suffered an injury after winning last year’s Coronation Cup Group One event which kept him out of action for almost a whole year. However, he made a remarkable comeback this season and showed his potential. Unfortunately, an international campaign seems unlikely due to the expected fast ground conditions in most overseas races.

Ultimately, it will be Sheikha Hissa’s decision regarding Hukum’s next move. Burrows plans to discuss their options with her in the coming days: “We’ll have a conversation and consider what possibilities are available,” he said thoughtfully.

Alyanaabi Eyes Dewhurst Stakes as Ground Conditions Align

Burrows’ stablemate Alyanaabi is set for a potential run in the Dewhurst Stakes later this month as weather forecasts suggest dry conditions that suit his running style. The son of Too Darn Hot impressed with a stylish late rally to claim victory in the Tattersalls Stakes recently at Newmarket’s Rowley Mile.

“He didn’t really have much competition during that race; he only truly raced during the final furlong. The following day, he ate up well and maintained his weight without losing any kilos,” explained Burrows about Alyanaabi’s effortless win. “Considering these initial signs of recovery, we might explore the option of competing in Group One action at Newmarket once again.”

Keeping an eye on ground conditions is crucial for Alyanaabi since he tends to perform better on faster surfaces or those labeled as good-to-firm.

“The forecast suggests predominantly good conditions which align perfectly with Alyanaabi’s preferences. We’ll assess our options carefully before making any decisions,” added Burrows optimistically.
