Canelo Alvarez set to take on Jaime Munguia on May 4th

Canelo Alvarez Set to Face Jaime Munguia in Upcoming Bout

Rumors are swirling that Canelo Alvarez has chosen his next opponent after parting ways with Premier Boxing Champions. According to ESPN Knockout, the Mexican boxing star is gearing up to face fellow countryman Jaime Munguia on Saturday, May 4.

The anticipated fight is likely to be a DAZN pay-per-view event, marking a return for Canelo to the platform where he has showcased most of his recent fights since late 2018. The matchup would see the 33-year-old Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KO) defending his undisputed super middleweight championship against the formidable 27-year-old Munguia (43-0, 34 KO), who boasts impressive victories over Sergiy Derevyanchenko and John Ryder at the super middleweight division.

    Changes in Plans

Last year, Alvarez inked a three-fight deal with Premier Boxing Champions but only completed one bout – a victorious showdown against Jermell Charlo in September. Initially rumored to face Jermall Charlo next on May 4, financial constraints within PBC reportedly led to negotiations falling through.

PBC’s recent shift towards producing shows exclusively for Amazon Prime Video following Paramount’s exit from boxing last year seems to have impacted their ability to meet Canelo’s monetary demands. As such, a matchup with Jermall was deemed financially unfeasible by PBC as they navigate this transitional period.

    Future Prospects

Despite these setbacks, Canelo remains one of boxing’s top draws and is poised for a potential collaboration with promoter Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing once again. A clash with Munguia presents an intriguing scenario as both fighters hail from Golden Boy stable; however, co-promotion details are yet to be finalized. .
