Champions League: Erik ten Hag Takes Accountability for Man Utd’s Squandering of Leads

Manchester United Manager Takes Responsibility for Champions League Struggles

In a surprising turn of events, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has shouldered the blame for his team’s recurring issue of surrendering leads in the prestigious Champions League tournament. Despite having a two-goal advantage on two separate occasions against Galatasaray in Istanbul, the Red Devils could only manage a frustrating 3-3 draw on Wednesday.

This disappointing outcome leaves their fate hanging by a thread as they currently sit at the bottom of Group A before other late kick-off matches. When probed about who was accountable for these shortcomings, Ten Hag candidly told TNT Sports: “It always falls on me.”

This season alone, Manchester United have squandered their lead in five group stage matches and have been ahead by two goals at some point during two of those games. The Dutch manager acknowledged his responsibility but also expressed optimism about ongoing improvements within the team’s development project.

Ten Hag stated, “We know we are heading in the right direction towards long-term success. However, if you want to make it through to further stages in the Champions League, winning these crucial games is imperative.” He highlighted issues with defensive lapses that led to losing valuable points: “Despite being up 3-1 earlier on, we cannot afford such mistakes as they ultimately make all the difference.”

The errors made by United goalkeeper Andre Onana provided Galatasaray with lifelines throughout the match and left Manchester United languishing at rock bottom in their group. Their final game against Bayern Munich will now determine their chances of progression. If FC Copenhagen manages to defeat Bayern, United will be eliminated from the competition. Should that match end in a draw, United would need a victory against Bayern and hope for another draw between Copenhagen and Galatasaray next month.

United captain Bruno Fernandes expressed his disappointment with the team’s performance and emphasized the need for individual accountability: “In games like these, we must be more intelligent and better at managing the flow of play. Everyone needs to step up and take responsibility for their mistakes. Unfortunately, our fate is no longer solely in our hands.”

Fernandes acknowledged that despite being in control twice during the match with numerous opportunities to close it out, Manchester United lacked clinical finishing: “What we have shown in the Champions League thus far falls short of what is required. This isn’t our first encounter with such frustrating outcomes; we must secure positive results when they matter most.”

In Istanbul, Manchester United had 17 shots on goal, including 10 inside the penalty area with four finding target. Fernandes also struck the post during the second half as they created a total of 33 scoring chances throughout the match.

The Red Devils initially took command early on through impressive goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes within just 18 minutes. However, Onana’s errors allowed Hakim Ziyech’s free-kicks to slip past him into the net—reviving Galatasaray’s hopes—and substitute Kerem Akturkoglu ultimately sealed a draw with his late equalizer.

Prior to kick-off, former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes remarked on TNT Sports: “You never quite know what you’ll get from this Manchester United side.” His lack of confidence was further evident after witnessing their erratic performance unfold:

“I don’t see them overcoming Bayern Munich. This deficiency in leadership is something we have been highlighting for years,” Scholes lamented, adding, “The game was wide open with players freely running through our defense. When you’re leading 2-0, it’s crucial to tighten up and maintain stability. It was absolute chaos out there today.”
