Colin Keane reclaims Irish champion title for another triumph

Colin Keane Clinches Fourth Consecutive Championship Jockey Title at the Curragh

In a display of sheer brilliance, Colin Keane secured his fourth consecutive championship jockey title in Ireland – and fifth overall – with an awe-inspiring performance at the iconic Curragh racecourse on Sunday.

Keane’s dominance in the championship became evident from August onwards, allowing him to compete stress-free over the last few weeks of the season. While he narrowly missed out on winning a Group One race this year, his triumph in the Group Two Minstrel Stakes on Zarinsk for trainer Ger Lyons added another feather to his cap.

This season saw Keane forge partnerships beyond his usual connections, riding for renowned trainers such as Noel Meade, Willie Mullins, and Henry de Bromhead. Additionally, he showcased his racing prowess by guiding six winners for his father Gerry.

The resilient Billy Lee emerged as Keane’s closest challenger for the second year running. Reflecting on his victory, Keane remarked that this year was comparatively more enjoyable and relaxing due to establishing a comfortable lead early on in August:

“I suppose it was a little bit more enjoyable this year; I was certainly able to relax these last few weeks. I got a good lead in August which was a big help, and thankfully I was able to secure my fifth title.”

Despite facing some challenges with Lyons not experiencing as much success as previous years, Keane expressed gratitude towards trainers like Noel Meade and Michael O’Callaghan who contributed significantly during this campaign. He also praised agent Ruaidhri Tierney for diligently managing opportunities throughout.

Zarinsk proved to be an exceptional filly under Keane’s guidance this season. The talented mare claimed victory in her Listed race along with triumphs in a Group Three and a Group Two event – an accomplishment of great significance for her.

When reflecting on memorable moments from the season, Keane highlighted his victory aboard Villanova Queen at Royal Ascot as well as riding Crystal Black to success for his father during Champions Weekend. He acknowledged the immense joy that comes with winning any race:

“Any day you ride a winner, you are enjoying it.”

Looking ahead, Keane plans to continue riding until Christmas before taking a break in the new year.

Jamie Powell Secures Leading Apprentice Title

In another remarkable feat, Jamie Powell claimed the leading apprentice title after notching 28 wins throughout the season. His successful campaign placed him 13th overall in the jockeys’ championship.

Powell expressed gratitude towards those who supported him since he began his career. Despite starting relatively late and lacking experience in pony racing, he credited the Racing Academy in Kildare Town for providing him with valuable training opportunities under Patrick Prendergast and subsequently John Oxx.

The young apprentice also acknowledged fellow jockey Niall McCullagh’s guidance during shared work sessions. Joining forces with trainer Johnny Murtagh proved instrumental to Powell’s development, benefitting from Murtagh’s feedback and insights gained through race reviews.

Earning accolades as champion apprentice at Curragh held tremendous significance for Powell due to its sentimental value:

“The Curragh is right on my doorstep; I’ve been going there since I was a kid. To be crowned champion apprentice here is truly special.”

Aidan O’Brien Clinches Trainers’ Championship Yet Again

In yet another extraordinary achievement, Aidan O’Brien secured his 26th trainers’ championship title. The esteemed trainer’s stellar campaign included victories in the Irish Derby and Irish Champion Stakes with Auguste Rodin, triumphing in the Irish 2,000 Guineas with Paddington, and emerging victorious in the Irish Oaks with Savethelastdance.

With these outstanding accomplishments, O’Brien continues to solidify his position as one of the most successful trainers in racing history.

As a true testament to their remarkable talent and dedication, Colin Keane, Jamie Powell, and Aidan O’Brien stand at the pinnacle of their respective categories within the captivating world of horse racing.
